What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?
Squamous cells line many organs including lungs, throat, and thyroid. In the skin, they sit near the surface, protecting the underlying tissue. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can develop anywhere there are squamous cells. It is the second most common form of skin cancer. It usually grows slowly, but if not treated, can spread to other parts of the body or grow locally and damage the skin, nerves, and important underlying structures. On the skin, SCCs can present as non-healing sores, boils, red patches, bumps, or growths. You are at much higher risk to develop one if you have had a sunburn, especially a blistering one when you were younger; have fair skin and light eyes; use (or have used) a tanning bed; or have sun-damaged skin.
