What is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia means hair loss, and there are several types. Alopecia areata is one of the most common hair loss disorders characterized by loss of hair in round patches, usually on the scalp. Often alopecia resolves on its own, but it can sometimes be permanent. There are three distinct forms of alopecia areata. The type depends on how much hair is lost:

  • Alopecia areata is the most common type. Patients with alopecia areata have one or multiple round, well-defined patches of hair loss.
  • Alopecia totalis is the loss of all hair on the scalp.
  • Alopecia universalis is the loss of all hair on the scalp and body.

If you believe you have alopecia areata and are interested in learning more about treatment, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with with one of our expert dermatology providers at your earliest convenience.

What Causes Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia is an autoimmune condition, meaning it is caused by the immune system attacking healthy parts of the body. Patients with alopecia experience their immune system attacking their healthy hair follicles, causing hair loss in small or large patches.
