What is an Actinic Keratosis?

One of the most common precancerous lesions of the skin is an actinic keratosis (AK). AKs are small, rough or scaly areas on the skin due to damage from sun exposure. Some actinic keratoses can turn into skin cancer, so it is important to catch them early. AKs are typically found on sun exposed areas such as the scalp, ears, arms, and face and can be pink, tan, or brown in color. If you believe you have AKs, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our expert dermatology providers at your earliest convenience.

What Causes Actinic Keratoses?

AKs develop from excessive and extensive exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays. While anyone is at risk of developing AKs throughout their life, AKs most commonly occur in patients who are 60 years or older, have a light complexion and light eyes, and have a history of sunburns or sunburning easily. There is a risk that untreated AKs can turn into skin cancer over time.

What Actinic Keratosis Treatments Are Available at Scottsdale Skin Boutique & Dermatology?

The expert dermatology providers at Scottsdale Skin Boutique & Dermatology will help you choose which treatments are best for your AKs as well as review the risks and benefits. Options include:

  • Prescription topical medication
  • Cryotherapy (freezing)
  • Skin biopsy if needed
