What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. Each year, over 3 million Americans are diagnosed with it. It usually grows slowly, but if not treated, can grow locally and damage the skin, nerves, and important underlying structures. It only very rarely spreads to other parts of the body. On the skin, BCCs can present as non-healing sores, red patches, bumps, or growths. You are at much higher risk to develop one if you have had a sunburn, especially a blistering one when you were younger; have fair skin and light eyes; use (or have used) a tanning bed; or have sun-damaged skin. If you notice any spot on your skin that is growing, bleeding, non-healing, or changing in any way, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our expert dermatology providers at your earliest convenience.

How is Basal Cell Carcinoma Treated at Scottsdale Skin Boutique & Dermatology?

No single treatment works for everyone. Factors such as age, location, severity, previous therapy, and other medical conditions may guide treatment decisions. The expert dermatology providers at Scottsdale Skin Boutique & Dermatology will help you choose which treatments are best for your basal cell carcinoma as well as review the risks and benefits. Options include:

What Can I Expect after My Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment?

The cure rate and aesthetic results will depend on a variety of factors. Treatment performed, type and size of the basal cell carcinoma, location on the body, skin elasticity, and sun damage will play a role. Optimal healing may require activity restrictions from 1-3 weeks depending on the site and complexity of the procedure. Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and mild discomfort are normal following treatment and typically resolve within a few days.
