What are Full-Body Skin Exams?
A full body skin examination, or skin cancer screening, is a visual exam that checks the skin for concerning lesions. Birthmarks, moles, and other suspicious spots that have an irregular color, size, shape, or texture are what dermatology providers are focusing on during these screenings.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The three most common forms are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Early detection with regular skin screenings and treatment gives these cancers a high cure rate. If you have not had a full body examination or are due for one, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with with one of our expert dermatology providers at your earliest convenience.
What are the Benefits of a Full-Body Skin Exam?
There are many benefits of receiving a full body skin examination at least once a year, including:
- A dermatology expert is monitoring your moles and freckles
- Focus on prevention and early detection of skin cancer
- Provides you and your dermatology provider with a detailed profile of your overall skin health
- Covered by most health insurance plans
What Can I Expect During My Full-Body Skin Exam?
During your full body skin examination, your dermatology provider will primarily focus on identifying cancerous or precancerous lesions. You can expect your comprehensive screening to last 15 to 30 minutes depending on your individual needs. Plan to arrive to your appointment without nail polish or makeup. You will be asked to remove your clothing and wear a medical gown or drape for the head-to-toe skin examination. Your provider will check each part of your body, noting any birthmarks or moles you have. If concerning lesions are identified during the exam, your provider will discuss testing and treatment options with you. Simple procedures such as cryotherapy and skin biopsies are completed at the time of your visit.
What Can I Expect After My Full-Body Skin Exam?
If skin biopsies were performed during your visit, results are generally received within two weeks. During this time your skin specimen is sent to a pathologist, a doctor who examines this sample under a microscope and renders a diagnosis. Your dermatology provider will review the pathologist's findings to determine the best possible way to treat your condition. One of our caring team members will contact you once your results are ready to discuss the diagnosis and treatment options recommended by your dermatology provider.
Healing from minimally invasive office procedures is dependent upon the size of the treatment area. Typically they heal within 7-14 days with minimal to no discomfort. Our team will provide you with proper post treatment care instructions specific to your procedure.
