What is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive procedure that uses broad-spectrum light to treat a variety of skin issues. It improves skin texture, reduces signs of aging such as wrinkles and age spots, and addresses sun damage and superficial blood vessels. It can also diminish acne and rosacea. During the treatment, pulses of light target specific chromophores in the skin, such as melanin (brown) or hemoglobin (red), without causing damage to the surrounding tissues. This process stimulates collagen production, promotes skin rejuvenation and balances tone. The end result is bright, glowing skin.

What are the Benefits of IPL?

There are many benefits to receiving IPL treatment with the expert certified laser technicians at Scottsdale Skin Boutique & Dermatology, including:

  • Increases firmness and elasticity in skin through collagen promotion.
  • Diminishes age spots and sun spots.
  • Reduces spider veins, angiomas, and telangiectasis.
  • Improves acne and rosacea.
  • Minimally invasive aesthetic procedure.
  • Minimal discomfort.

What Can I Expect During My IPL Treatment?

When you visit Scottsdale Skin Boutique & Dermatology for IPL treatment, our laser certified technician will first examine your skin and discuss your skin goals to determine if the treatment is a good fit. Your skin will be cleansed and you will wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the bright light. Next, a generous layer of cooling gel will be applied to the area before treatment starts. Our expert technician will use the IPL handheld device to emit quick blasts of high-intensity light onto your skin. The length of each appointment will vary depending on the area being treated. Once the treatment is complete, all remaining gel will be removed, and the area will be wiped clean. Most patients report minimal to no discomfort during treatment.

What Can I Expect After My IPL Treatment?

There is very minimal downtime after an IPL treatment. Immediately following treatment, the skin may be red or blotchy and feel sunburned. This can last for a few hours. Brown spots and pigmentation may start to darken. By day two or three, the skin is feeling tight and dry and the dark spots are beginning to look like “coffee grounds”. Over the next several days, there will be a rough texture to the skin as the darkened pigment begins to slough. During days seven to ten, you will likely experience ongoing sloughing and fading of the dark spots. Ten days to two weeks after the IPL treatment, the skin should have returned to its normal texture.
