What is Molluscum Contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum, commonly referred to as molluscum, is a viral skin infection that is characterized by the appearance of small, raised bumps along the skin. While these bumps are generally painless and benign, they can persist between two months and four years. Molluscum can present anywhere on the body. It is most commonly seen in young to school-age children.

What Causes Molluscum Contagiosum?

Because molluscum is a viral skin infection, it is commonly caused by direct contact with the skin of an infected person or sharing damp towels, clothing, personal items, pool toys, or gym mats (e.g., wrestlers, gymnastics, etc.) with someone who has molluscum. Siblings bathing together and swimming together (especially when sharing kickboards and towels) also seem to be risk factors to develop the bumps, but this is not a reason to limit swimming. If you believe you or your child has molluscum, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of our expert dermatology providers at your earliest convenience.
